On January 30th, Ritte Van Vlaanderen Bicycles, one of the main brands carried at the shop was featured in wired.com. The article titled “Amazing Ritte Van Vlaanderen Bikes Born From Irreverence” was written by Chuck Squatriglia and it covers the story of how the company came about. It also features Cykel, currently the only distributor in northern California, and why we chose to go with them when we started our shop.

“We wanted to go with smaller brands in our store, the up-and-coming brands, and Ritte is a really new company,” said Niklas Pearce, the general manager of Cykel, a bike boutique in San Francisco. “We wanted to support the small brands. And they’re nice to deal with, easier to deal with, than some of the larger companies.”

Biomechanical Bicycle Position (BBP)

We take bike fit seriously at Cykel. Ask anyone who’s been fit and they’ll tell you how big of a difference it can make in a bike.

In the weeks leading up to us opening the shop doors we spent some time with Elite Bicycles learning their Biomechanical Bicycle Positioning (BBP) system; a fit protocol developed by David Greenfield. We flew David and Max (Dave’s right hand man and master fitter) out from Philly in early March to spend a week teaching us the BBP, doing a bunch of practice fits, and eating a ton of great food. The information we learned from them is invaluable and is an integral part of our shop.

“The Perfect Fit begins with an understanding of the athlete’s ambitions and abilities in order to educate them on achieving their goals and ultimately building a position that maximizes power, comfort, and handling without losing the bike’s ability to evolve with the rider.”

All fittings begin with the Pre-Fit interview, which is designed to gain a full understanding of the client’s athletic, physical, and medical history, this will provide a good head start in the determination of any physiological challenges, physical limitations, or neurological muscular patterns that may need to be addressed during exertion and pre-exhaustion. Physical and competitive goals, body image, lifestyle habits and personal anatomy also play a VERY important role to discern the appropriate starting point in an evolving biomechanically friendly position for each individual rider. Everyone is a “snowflake”.
